What Is an Acceptable Turnitin Similarity Score?

The question we get most often is this: “My similarity is 23%. Am I in trouble?”

The honest answer is that there is no universal standard. Turnitin is a measuring instrument, not a judge. The number it reports only says how much of your text overlaps with other sources — and overlap is not automatically plagiarism.

Why no fixed number exists

Three things make the same number mean completely different things in different situations.

Your field. In engineering and medicine, technical terminology and standard procedures repeat by necessity. A chemistry paper at 25% may be perfectly clean, because much of that is compound names and lab protocols.

Report settings. If the bibliography and quotations were not excluded, the number is inflated. A thesis reference list alone can account for 10 to 15 percent.

University policy. Some institutions set a 15% ceiling, others 20%, and many publish no number at all, leaving it to the examiner.

These are observed conventions, not rules. Always read your own institution's policy.

The number that matters more than the total

Here is something many students miss: the largest single match matters more than the overall percentage.

A paper at 25% drawn from fifty different sources at half a percent each is normal academic writing. A paper at 12% where all of it comes from one source means an entire passage was copied — and that is serious.

In the similarity report, look at the source list. If any single source accounts for more than 5%, rewrite that section.

How to bring the score down

Rewrite properly, do not swap synonyms. Replacing words with synonyms does not fool Turnitin and makes your writing worse. Close the source, then express the idea in your own sentence structure.

Use fewer direct quotations. Every quotation adds to the percentage, even when correctly cited. If you have five, turn three of them into your own summary.

Cite correctly. Proper citation protects you from an accusation of plagiarism even when it does not lower the number.

Write your methods section carefully. Methods usually show the highest similarity because everyone describes the same standard procedure. Add the specifics of your own study.

Check before you submit

The worst way to learn your similarity score is from your examiner. By then there is no time to fix anything.
