Does Checking My Paper Add It to the Turnitin Database?

This is the question every careful student eventually asks, and getting it wrong creates a problem that is genuinely hard to undo.

What the repository is

Turnitin maintains an archive of student papers. When an instructor sets up an assignment, they choose whether submissions are stored in that archive. If storage is on, your paper becomes part of the database that future submissions are checked against.

That is useful for the institution — it catches students who reuse each other's work. But it creates a trap for you.

The trap

Suppose you check your thesis through some service that stores submissions. Your paper joins the archive.

Weeks later, your university submits the same thesis through their own Turnitin account. The system searches the archive, finds your stored copy, and reports 100% similarity.

Now you have to explain to your examiner why your thesis matches an existing document word for word. You can explain it, and the match can usually be excluded, but it means an awkward conversation, delays, and in some institutions a formal review — over something that was never misconduct at all.

How to avoid it

Use a service that submits with repository mode off. Your paper gets checked against the archive, but is never added to it. Nothing is left behind, and your university's later check sees a clean document.

Before you use any checking service, ask them directly. A service that cannot give you a clear answer is not one to trust with your thesis.

What about self-plagiarism

A related question: if you reuse your own earlier work — a conference paper, a previous assignment — is that plagiarism?

It can be. Many institutions treat reusing your own submitted work without disclosure as an academic offence, on the grounds that you are claiming credit twice for the same effort. The safe approach is to cite your own earlier work exactly as you would cite anyone else's.

Checking safely, repeatedly

Once you use a service that does not store submissions, something useful becomes possible: you can check as often as you like. Finish a chapter, check it, fix the problems, move on. No accumulating copies, no risk of self-matching.

That is a far better way to work than one anxious check the night before submission.

Get your report without your document being stored. Repository mode is off for every check, your file is deleted from our server once the report is delivered, and both the similarity and AI reports arrive within minutes.
