How Accurate Is Turnitin's AI Detection Report?

Until recently, students only worried about plagiarism. Now there is a second column: the percentage of text that appears to be AI-generated.

These two reports are entirely separate and should not be confused.

How the two reports differ

The similarity report compares your text against a vast archive: web pages, published articles, and student papers. If a sentence came from somewhere else, it finds it and shows you the source. This is search.

The AI report compares nothing. It looks at writing patterns: how predictable the sentences are, how uniform the structures, how average the word choices. This is statistical inference.

That difference matters. The similarity report can show its evidence and you can verify it. The AI report gives a percentage and offers no proof.

How accurate is it

Here we should be honest: this technology makes mistakes, and the mistakes go both ways.

False positives mean your own writing gets flagged. This happens more often for:

• Writers whose first language is not English and who write in clear, structured sentences
• Technical and scientific text, which is uniform by nature
• Methods sections and literature reviews, with their dry, standardised style

False negatives mean AI-generated text that goes undetected after human editing.

For exactly this reason many universities have stated that an AI percentage alone is not proof of misconduct and must be considered alongside other evidence.

If your own writing gets flagged

First: do not panic and do not rush to mangle your text.

Keep your drafts. Version history in Word or Google Docs is your strongest defence. It shows the text was built gradually through editing.

Keep your notes and sources. Reading files, annotations and your reference library are all evidence of real work.

Look at the flagged passages. If a section really is flat and lifeless, rewrite it — not to trick the system, but because it will be better writing. Add a specific example, vary your sentence lengths, and state your own view where you have one.

Explain if you need to. Instructors generally understand these tools are imperfect. A calm explanation with your drafts attached is usually enough.

About the masked score

Sometimes you see *% instead of a number. That means the system could not judge with enough confidence — usually because the text is short or unusually structured. A detailed breakdown can still be requested in that case.
